Earlier this month, the City of Clinton asked residents to help “Find That Leak” after Public Works crews began investigating an unexplained loss of water within the City’s system.

As it turns out, the mystery leak was hiding in a pretty unexpected place, and it took one young Clinton resident to find it.

While doing what kids do best, exploring, a 10-year-old Clinton resident ventured into a wooded area and made quite the discovery: an old fire hydrant that had been installed years ago during the development of a subdivision that was never completed.

Over time, the area had become heavily wooded and the hydrant was largely hidden from view. A fallen tree had damaged the hydrant, causing water to continuously escape in an area where it could easily go unnoticed.

The young explorer spotted the hydrant and knew something wasn’t right. After telling an adult about the discovery, the information made its way to the City, allowing Public Works crews to locate the hydrant and finally identify the source of the unexplained water loss.

What started as a City-wide search ended with a pretty great reminder: Clinton belongs to all of us, and everyone can play a part in taking care of our community.

Sometimes making a difference means reporting a pothole. Sometimes it means letting us know about a water issue. And sometimes it means being 10 years old, exploring the woods and solving a mystery the rest of us couldn’t find.

In recognition of his efforts and contribution to the community, the City of Clinton will formally recognize the young resident for helping solve the “Find That Leak” adventure.
