After ringing the bell at the Train Depot earlier during the day in honor of Constitution Day, Mayor Phil Fisher read a proclamation proclaiming September 17th through September 23rd, 2024, as Constitution Week in the City of Clinton. This action aligns with national efforts to recognize and celebrate the adoption of the U.S. Constitution.
The Board of Aldermen approved numerous initiatives focusing on public safety and improving the quality of life in Clinton. You can read a brief highlight of those actions below or view the board meeting in its entirety on the City of Clinton Facebook page.
Will Purdie, City Attorney, proposed a resolution passed by the Board that would prohibit synthetic cocaine, Kratom, and other synthetic products from being sold in the city limits of Clinton. A notice will be distributed to local retailers which currently offer these synthetic products who will have an allotted amount of time to comply with the ordinance.
The city engineer, Bill Owen, brought before the board a request to use city monies to assist Hinds County with the replacement of the bridge on Northside Drive. The current deck slabs, previously thought to be salvageable, were a safety concern upon further inspection. The Board approved the payment for new deck slabs to ensure that once the bridge is reopened there will be no further threat to public safety.
In addition to the Board’s approval of an Interlocal Agreement between Hinds County and the City of Clinton regarding improvements to Kids Towne Park, Director of Parks & Recreation Courtney Nunn proposed the acceptance of the lowest and best bid from Mid-State Construction of MS related to 2% park building projects. This bid includes the construction of pickleball courts, restrooms, a pavilion, and a concession area at Kids Towne Park, as well as restrooms at Traceway Park for baseball 10, softball five, and softball six.
While there were not enough monies within the budget brought in by the revenue of the 2% tax, Nunn will rebid her initiative for the reconstruction of the Traceway Park softball fourplex and restrooms with concessions at soccer five, at a later date.
Director of Community Development Roy Edwards presented a rendering by Lilly Grace Crawshaw to paint a mural on the north side of Indian Lanes. The mural will include a QR code which will lead participants on a scavenger hunt around the city of Clinton. Crawshaw submitted her rendering to the Board as part of her effort to become the youngest female Eagle Scout, at 12 years old, in the Four Rivers District.
