Three Locations in Clinton Recognized as Certified Arboretums
The City of Clinton proudly announces a groundbreaking achievement: it now holds the distinction of having more certified arboretums within its city limits than any other city in Mississippi.
Donna Yowell, executive director of the Mississippi Urban Forest Council, presented the city with three certificates to recognize the certification of various locations in Clinton as certified arboretums. To become an accredited arboretum, a designated area must contain at least 30 native tree species. In addition, there must be an educational component that will serve as an educational resource, offering opportunities for residents to learn more about the native species and their contribution to the environment. This resource, once completed, will be available on the Clinton website.
“Our organization, the Mississippi Urban Forest Council is proud to recognize three new arboretums in Clinton. Their dedication to urban forestry and conservation will pay off in a big way for generations, as a place businesses and citizens want to live,” said Yowell. “These types of projects ensure a healthy tree canopy to improve the quality of life plus bring many social and environmental benefits to the community”.
The three arboretums in Clinton are located at the Clinton Visitor Center, the Quisenberry Library, and the neighborhood of Bruenburg. Not only is Clinton the first city in the state of Mississippi with three certified arboretums, Bruenburg is also the first neighborhood recognized in the state as an arboretum as well.
This achievement highlights Clinton’s commitment to environmental conservation and enhancing the quality of life for its residents. These green spaces offer shade, improve air quality, and support biodiversity, all while providing educational opportunities and beautiful natural areas for the community to enjoy. Clinton continues to set the standard for sustainability and urban green space development across the state.
