Official Statement from the City of Clinton Regarding WLBT Coverage

August 28, 2025

The City of Clinton welcomes coverage of the progress we are making with regard to infrastructure improvements but must object to the inaccurate and unfounded characterizations in the recent WLBT story on the city road resurfacing project. To suggest that Clinton’s roads are “crumbling” and “pothole riddled” in any substantial manner is simply untrue.

Mayor Will Purdie stated, “I am deeply disappointed in the WLBT article, as it does not at all reflect the tone or tenor of the interview I had with Ms. Anderson. Given the opportunity, I would have gladly addressed and corrected the inaccurate depiction that was ultimately presented. Clinton has a strong and effective history in addressing paving needs and will continue to do so in a proactive, strategic manner.

Clinton has long placed an emphasis on street paving and has made a concerted effort over multiple terms to increase the dedicated street paving budget. We are now able to allocate over a million dollars annually to street paving and have been doing so for a number of years.

Clinton uses an objective, evidence-based scoring system to determine which roads are in the worst shape and begins each year’s paving project with those. This allows the city to ensure that we are consistently addressing the areas that need it most.

We are proud of our track record in street paving and will continue to employ proactive approaches to address all infrastructure needs.
