October 15 Board of Aldermen Meeting Overview

October 16, 2024

During the October 15, 2024, board meeting, Donna Yowell, executive director of the Mississippi Urban Forest Council, presented the city of Clinton with the 2024 Scenic Community of Mississippi award. This award is presented to one community each year that strives to manage land, water, landscapes, and other natural resources in sustainable and attractive methods.

Yowell also presented certificates on behalf of MUFC to three locations within the city of Clinton that have qualified as certified arboretums. To qualify, a green space within the community must have at least 30 native tree species and construct an educational component to educate visitors on the importance of the native trees and their impact on the environment. The three locations include:

The Clinton Visitor Center
Quisenberry Library
Bruenburg subdivision

The Bruenburg subdivision is the first neighborhood in the state to be recognized as an arboretum by the MUFC.

Alderwoman Beverly Oliver recognized the partnership between the Clinton High School swim team and the Clinton YMCA to host the first swim meet in the city of Clinton. The meet was hosted on September 14, 2024, at the YMCA. The CHS swim team will travel to Tupelo to compete in the MHSAA State Championships on Thursday, October 17.

During the mayor’s discussion and reports, the board approved the use of funds to improve the entries and doorways at the Quisenberry Library. Director of Public Works, Phillip Lilley, was also authorized to apply for a grant which would allow for lighting improvements at the library as well.

As the Krilakis Greek restaurant prepares to open in Olde Towne, the board approved a certificate of appropriateness to owner Andrew Creel for the addition of windows to the property located at 312 Jefferson Street.

The vote to rezone the Kirkland Development from R-1(Single Family Residential) to MU (Mixed Use) was tabled to allow all those opposing the development the opportunity to resubmit their petition. The petition could not be certified as submitted as it did not meet the legal standard set forth by the Supreme Court which states that, for a signature to be valid, it must appear on a page with a heading with clear intent for the action being taken.

At the close of the meeting during other business, Alderman James Lott made a motion to amend the city budget to move $150,000 dollars from the paving budget to firefighter salaries. The decision was made to table the motion in order to have further discussion on the issue.
